UK Social Entrepreneur of the Year finalist 2014
New Caledonian Woodlands
One of 5 finalists from 181 entries, please support New Caledonian Woodlands by voting for us.
New Caledonian Woodlands is a social and environmental enterprise and charity that works for the benefit of both people and planet. Delivering projects across central Scotland, with a focus on Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife and the Scottish Borders, our purpose is to enhance the natural environment, inspire positive environmental behaviour change and improve mental/ physical well-being and employability.
With ‘people projects’ focused on supporting adults experiencing mental ill-health and social isolation towards employment, and ‘planet projects’ focused on encouraging people to switch to greener lifestyles, New Caledonian Woodlands has been working with quiet determination to make a difference since 2006. Whether planting new woodland or managing old ones, making furniture from trees felled by hand, pressing hand-picked apples for juice or learning more about environmental impact and how to reduce it, New Caledonian Woodlands is busy in the woods most days – working with over 1,200 people per year.
We have grown continuously since 2006; starting out with 1 staff member delivering 2 projects, we now have 10 staff members delivering 8 projects. Statistics only tell half the story though – the way we go about things defines us so much more. We are an organisation borne from grassroots passion and belief. Our projects have been developed with creativity to meet needs that we have identified through first-hand experience. Staff and participants at New Caledonian Woodlands have a lot of ‘head space’ within which they can develop and shape projects and ideas for new projects. This means that what we do is sometimes a little bit different – brave, thoughtful, innovative and sometimes just a little bit oddball.
We do everything with absolute integrity and our passion drives us on. Please donate to New Caledonian Woodlands a little of your passion by voting for us to win this award. We would be extremely grateful if you could promote our work and the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award vote through your communication channels – Twitter, website, e-zines etc. The vote is now open and runs until 31st October 2014.
The page to vote is www.the-sse.org/SEYA where you will also find a video introducing the five finalists. Votes are cast by email address and limited to one per person. After placing your vote, you will be instructed to check your inbox and to verify it (some people are saying they found it in their junk/spam folder). The winner will be decided entirely by public voting with £10,000 being the prize. This money would offer us the chance to develop our Edinburgh site into a ‘green hub’ that will become an integral part of our participants’ journey back to good health.
