November 2012

Conference, organised by CFINE and CFE , Newham, London

In Central Hall, Westminster, London, 22nd November 2012

"The UK Community Food Sector: Towards Sustainability through Collective Action and Social Enterprise"

Conference sponsored by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation

Community Food Initiatives North East (CFINE), based in Aberdeen, Scotland, has been promoting a collective approach to development and growth in the community food sector. After considerable work, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation has supported an application which includes finance for this conference, to be addressed by Mr Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment . The pro-ject, ‘Local Produce Procurement and Collective Purchasing,’ is summarised:

"To strengthen and contribute to the sustainability of the Community Food sector in Scotland by securing a more competitive cost base for fruit and veg through collective purchasing arrangements. Wherever possible, contributing to the environment through reduced food miles and to the local economies of the different areas in Scotland through local produce procurement. This will be achieved, in part, through establishing collective purchasing arrangements with the Scottish CFN and others in the sector, including partners in England and Wales".

The conference will provide information on the background, detail and aims of this initiative and critically, to agree organisational arrangements and action to take this initiative forward.

While the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation-supported project focuses on Scotland, CFINE has been working closely with Community Food Enterprise in London over the past 15 months and it is hoped that a complementary project will be established in England/ Wales.

Exciting Innovative – be a part in building this project and joint working for the collective benefit. The Foundation has made available some finance to support participation-small amounts can be made available as a contribution to travel and subsistence for those organisations which could not afford attendance.
