The SENs: Friday 6th December 2013

Senscot and Social Firms Scotland are, this week, participating in the EU SEN’s Best Practice Conference in Malmo. Each of the 12 members (including Scotland) is providing case studies on examples of best practice in their respective countries. Of particular interest to us was the Italian case study (Lombardy Region – around Milan etc). They presented on ‘The experience of consortia supporting growing enterprises in Italy’ – with a focus on the ability of social enterprises to work together and create specific collaborative structures (i.e. consortia, networks etc.). There are a number of elements in their approach that, in view of the current situation, could be well worth considering in Scotland. See more.

Dundee SEN, this week, launched an exciting new investment fund. £200k has been donated from the John Sharp Benevolent Trust and will go towards supporting new social enterprise start-ups in the city. It’s another feather in the cap for the Network in Dundee. Read more. Senscot has a couple of offices available for rent at Manor Place, Edinburgh. Could accommodate 4 comfortably in each office. Rent circa £6k per annum. If you’re interested, contact Aidan Pia. Community organisations in Scotland have until 31 January to apply to a new Scottish Govt allocation of £1m specifically for the purchase of new minibuses. The fund – jointly managed by SCVO and Community Transport Association – will consider applications up to £50k.See more. Latest round of Firstport awards were announced this week with another batch of aspiring social entrepreneurs receiving around £40k between them to kick start a range of initiatives across the country. Since 2009, Firstport has distributed nearly £3m to over 400 individuals. See more. Social enterprise in Falkirk fared well at last week’s Falkirk Herald Business Awards – picking up four awards. Winners included: Cloybank Estate scooped Best Business in the Community / Social Enterprise award; Caipercaille Cruisers Ltd (half-owned by Re-Union) won Best Tourism award; and the Link Group continued their winning streak, picking up both the Employer of the Year award as well as the top award – Outstanding Achievement of the Year. See more. Last week’s ‘Social Entrepreneur Chat Show’, hosted by The Melting Pot’s, Claire Carpenter, was a great success – with plans afoot to run another one next year. Claire had ‘on the couch’ Mel Young (Homeless World Cup); Marianne Paterson (Ayrshire Children’s Services); and Greg Chauvet (The Bike Station Glasgow). They have also produced three short films covering the event. See more and view the films. Couple of reminders with Christmas looming up. You may wish check out the Run Native site for gifts for family or friends. Also, Just the Business has put together a ‘Guide to Social Enterprise Planning’ (£15). All proceeds got the Social Enterprise Collection (Scotland), set up in memory of John Pearce and currently housed at Glasgow Caley.
