Bookings for this year’s SE Conference and Ceilidh (13th/14th Nov) are going pretty well – over 110 places have been filled – around 30 still available. Delegate rate for SEN Members is £50 and includes Conference/Ceilidh/Dinner/B&B (day only rate is £30) at the Westerwood Hotel. To get a booking form, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Last week, we opened applications for this year’s Dragons’ Den – £5k to the winner – closing date for entries is Monday 27th October. Next week, Social Firms Scotland and Senscot will be attending the EU SEN in Cyprus – this is the last meeting of the EU SEN before the Dissemination Conference which takes place in Brussels in January 2015. This meeting will address the issue of ‘visibility’ of social entrepreneurship across Europe, focussing on legal forms; evidence and research; social impact; quality standards; communication and networking. One of the primary objectives of the EU SEN is to ensure social enterprise plays a full role in helping to meet EU Structural Fund objectives in promoting social inclusion, job creation and combating poverty. We are encouraged to see that Scottish Govt has acknowledged this role in its latest EU Operational Plan.
On Monday 27th Oct, Falkirk and District SEN and Senscot (as part of the Social Enterprise Alliance with Social Firms Scotland and Social Enterprise Scotland), is hosting a Local Social Enterprise Policy Event. The event will showcase local social enterprises, discuss the current local and national social enterprise landscape and the needs of our growing sector. This will also be an opportunity for local support partners to further develop relationships with Falkirk and District SEN. For booking info’, contact Karina.
Bookings are now open for the Dundee Social Enterprise Conference, ‘Spotlight on Progress & Future Opportunities’. The keynote speech will be delivered by John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth. The event is on 29th October in Discovery Point in Dundee. Congratulations to Borders SEN members, The Borders Green Team, based in Hawick, which has been recognised as having a first-class business model, by Firstport, and is now included in ‘Ditto’ bank of business ideas. The enterprise provides employment and training for adults with learning difficulties and is set to support other aspiring social entrepreneurs by sharing the secrets of its business success. On Tuesday this week, Senscot, Senscot Legal, Social Firms Scotland and DTAS supported a Social Enterprise Conference hosted by East Ayrshire CVO in Kilmarnock. Almost 40 delegates attended to listen to an overview of support available for social enterprise. This included presentations from Senscot Legal on legal issues, DTAS on Community Ownership and Asset Transfer – with Senscot giving an overview of wider support available.
