The SENs: Friday 31st October 2014

Dundee City Council and Dundee SEN hosted its SE Conference in the city this week, entitled ‘Spotlight on Progress & Future Opportunities’.  An impressive turnout – over 100 delegates – heard a series of informative and entertaining presentations from Derek Marshall (Factory Skatepark); Dr Andrew Murray; Neil Mathieson (Atlantis Leisure); Simon Teasdale (Glasgow C.U) and Rick Rijsdijk (Social Value Lab). Rick also presented the findings of the newly published Mapping Report. Headlines include: 123 SEs; combined income of £91m; spending power of £83m; and total assets of £105m. Here is link to full report available and also presentations at the event. On Monday, Falkirk and District SEN (FDSEN) and Senscot (as part of the SSE Alliance with Social Firms Scotland and Social Enterprise Scotland) hosted a Social Enterprise Policy event in the Trinity Church in Falkirk. Delegates had the opportunity to hear from Falkirk Council on the developments of their SE Strategy; Falkirk CVS and local SE’s – Link Housing Association and The Gingerbread Cafe. Delegates then engaged in discussion re issues that are arising from the consultation process of the emerging national SE strategy – other SENs interested in similar sessions, please contact Kim. Presentations from the Falkirk event can be viewed here. On Wednesday, Senscot hosted the first meeting of the Outdoor Pursuits SE’s that are members of the Sport SEN at Birnham Arts Centre. The meeting included a session on social media and input from Riddell Graham, Director of Partnerships (Visit Scotland), who spoke to the organisations about Visit Scotland’s Quality Assurance Scheme. As always at these meetings, the networking between the organisations – sharing good practice and ideas was excellent and the SE’s have indicated they want to make this a regular meeting in the SEN calendar.
