The SENs: Friday 21st April 2017

Last week’s launch of the Social Enterprise Action Plan includes a series of actions and activities that Scottish Govt will look to support over the next three years. Amongst these are some ‘early actions’ – two of which Senscot will be directly involved in. The Partnership and Procurement Hub will look to build on our existing work in supporting SEs and third sector organisations looking to form partnerships and consortia. We are pleased to announce that we have now appointed Yvonne McBride as our new P&P Hub Manager. Yvonne currently works with North Lanarkshire Council and will be taking up her post mid-May. We will also be carrying out a feasibility study on a consortia model for SENs that, we believe, could contribute to their important future growth, development and sustainability. An initial meeting with SEN reps takes place today in Perth. We’ll have a further update next week. Last month’s Profitable Partnerships event, hosted by DSEN, brought experts from a diverse range of fields together to discuss how the third and private sectors can work together to add social value to communities. Keynote speaker Gary Millar, Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, spoke of his city’s Social Value Charter, which asks local businesses to take a pledge to invest 10% more of their current outgoings into the local economy. The result, he said, would be a £10bn boon for the city. DSEN are now keen to develop a similar Charter for the Tayside region. Anyone looking to take part in discussions going forward can contact to register their interest. The SE Census 2017 is now underway. It’ll only take 15 mins to fill in. We’ll have more on this next week. Yesterday, Senscot attended a session hosted by Edinburgh Social Enterprise (ESE), which focused on the Govt’s 10-Year National SE Strategy and what it means for SE in Edinburgh. Dr Winston Kwon, from Edinburgh University Business School, led the session with his perspective on the strategy and its impact. The intention is to inform ESE’s own strategy moving forward and ensure the organisation is fully representing the view of social enterprises in Edinburgh. The annual Highland TSI conference is to be held on 12th May in Strathpeffer, Ross and Cromarty. The event is a great opportunity for third sector organisations to come together, exchange ideas and make new connections. Speakers at this year’s conference include Yvonne Strachan, head of the Scottish Govt’s Equality, Human Rights and Third Sector Division, and Tim Wright, director and co-founder of Twintangibles, a leading crowdfunding consultancy agency. Delegates will also be asked to participate in a series of roundtable debates, covering topics such as community ownership, police priorities, start-up funding and community justice. Register for the conference and view the full event programme. Glasgow Caledonian University is to host a ‘Making Global Goals Local Business’ event as part of a UK roadshow organised by the UN, Global Impact and PRME UK Networks. The aim of the event is to demonstrate how local businesses can work with the public sector and third sector to contribute to both the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and Scotland’s Goals for Sustainable Development. The sustainable development agenda sets out a range of measures that can be taken to tackle poverty, protect the environment, improve education and promote equality. Register for the event here. A pilot scheme has been launched to fund activities which aim to increase the role of local heritage in communities across Scotland. The Great Place Scheme wants to strengthen the networks between heritage, civic and community organisations through a series of projects that will bring citizens and local businesses together. Applications are now open for funding packages of between £100,000 and £1,000,000, delivered over a period of up to three years. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest by 12pm on 8th June.
