The SENs: Friday 1st November 2013

The SE Conference and Ceilidh is less than two weeks away (14th/15th Nov). Numbers are around the 160 mark. The Dragons’ Den contestants have now been selected – all pitching for the Dragons` £5k prize. Other prizes include – 2 days consultancy from Rocket Science; One-to-one coaching from the Social Enterprise Academy; and the Audience Prize which, as in previous years, will be crowd-funded. Folk will be contacted over the coming days to make their ‘pledge’. A new element to the event this year will be the Pop-up Shop selling products from Social Enterprises including honey, jam, jewellery, Christmas cards and much more. South Ayrshire SEN (SASEN) is hosting their inaugural conference on 22nd November at The Carrick Centre in Maybole. The event will officially launch SASEN, launch new funding from South Ayrshire Council for social enterprises have guest speakers and lots of opportunity for networking. More information on the conference. Congratulations to Glasgow and Cultural SEN members, Glasgow Women’s’ Library,  who were awarded the Enterprising Museum Award at Wednesday night’s Arts & Business Scotland Awards 2013! See more. Dundee SEN welcome two new members of staff today, Neil Stoddart (Social Enterprise Development Officer) is part of the Reshaping Care for Older People team, employed by DVA and seconded to DSEN and Angie Foreman, (Social Enterprise Development Officer) will also be starting on a two year post funded by The John Sharp Futures Fund. The fund will give out grants as well as provide support in marketing and training for the recipients. A full launch of the fund will be held in December when the criteria and application forms will be available. Social Firms Scotland will be hosting their annual event on 28th November at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, ‘Seizing Opportunities, Managing Risk’.  Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney MSP will be the keynote speaker other speakers include Niall McShannon, Managing Director at Clydesdale Community Initiatives, Billy Sloan, Chief Executive at SCARF, and Peter Scott, Chief Executive at Enable Scotland. To book your place, or for more information, please contact either Pete or Jayne. Sport SEN members are heading to Dundee on the 5th November on a study visit to the Factory Skatepark and winner of this year’s Social Enterprise ‘One to Watch Award’, The Fun Factory. There’s still a few places left for the visit if you’re interested in attending contact Diane Cameron. Social Enterprise Scotland’s 7th meeting of the Cross-Party Group (CPG) on Social Enterprise, will take place on 3rd Dec 20 in The Scottish Parliament. The topic for the meeting is the new Procurement Reform (Scotland) Bill. The event is free to attend for anyone who works in or closely with social enterprise can see information and book a place online. The Bill has now been published, see more.
