The SENs: Friday 14th July 2017

The Scottish Government is currently developing a National Diet and Obesity Strategy. In common with other countries in the developed world Scotland faces a significant challenge from rising levels of obesity. This is an area that a number of social enterprises and SEN members expressed an interest in earlier this year – either to share experience, learn or look at opportunities for joint working. We want to see the knowledge and experience of social enterprises in addressing obesity reflected in the national strategy and therefore invite you to a Joint Thematic SEN discussion on this issue. Tony Rednall from the Scottish Govt’s Creating Health Team (who are leading on the strategy) will join the SEN discussion. Book your place through EventBrite or contact for further information. Following interviews last week we have now successfully recruited the Partnership for Procurement (P4P) team. Neil Young will join us from the Wise Group as P4P Coordinator and Jennifer Paterson previously Senscot Legal will also join the team in a supporting capacity. Neil and Jenifer will join existing team members Yvonne McBride (Manager) and George McConnachie (Coordinator) taking the team to full capacity. One of the first outings for the P4P team will be the 9th Annual “Meet the Buyer” event hosted by the Supplier Development Programme on 28th September at Hampden Park. The event will see 28 Scottish Local Authorities, the Ministry of Defence, DfID and Crown Commercial Services among the 70+ organisations confirmed to exhibit along with over 1,000 Scottish companies. The P4P team will be hosting the first ever Social Enterprise Zone at the event. For more information contact Social in the Gardens 2017 organised by Edinburgh Social Enterprise will see hundreds of social entrepreneurs gather at Edinburgh’s Ross Bandstand for a carnival of food, dance, standup, theatre, arts, crafts and more. Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd August. View event listing. Edinburgh Social Enterprise is now looking for volunteers to help out over the 2 days, see hereBRAG Enterprises are launching a new night to bring the Kingdom’s social entrepreneurs together in support of local creative projects. Modelled on Detroit Soup, which has raised over $130,000 for local projects since 2011, Fife Soup is a micro funding event where four groups or enterprises can pitch their ideas to the local community. For £5, you gain entry to the event, get food, entertainment and one all-important vote. Each group has four minutes to pitch to the crowd, who in turn ask four questions – the winning group then takes all the money raised at the event to put towards their project. First Fife Soup is on 1st September at the Townhill Bowling Club. Book your tickets. Thank you to Garioch Sports Centre who hosted a Community Learning Exchange last week in Inverurie. Our Sports Coordinator Alan went along with a few of our Sport SEN members to hear about their excellent community sports programmes, including walking football, footgolf and a host of activities for young people. The Garioch team also revealed to the participants about their ambitious plans for expansion, which would make the centre one of the biggest sports amenities in Scotland. A particular thanks to Kevin Bonarius, who facilitated the visit and provided an informative presentation on their plans for the future. Many SEN members will be familiar with ‘social prescribing’ which is a means of enabling GPs and other health professionals to refer people to a range of local, non-clinical services usually in the third, charity or social enterprise sectors. A feasibility study is currently underway to scope out the establishment of a Social Prescribing Network across the North of Ireland and Scotland. A consortia of Community Enterprise and Scottish Community Development Centre has been commissioned to investigate this model and consider what the appetite for such a model could look like in Northern Ireland and Scotland. To contribute to the feasibility study, head over to Survey Monkey.  Notices TENDERS: Consultancy to develop a new Tourism and Events Development Plan – Stirling Council, Provision of Transport Contracts – Taxi/PHC – Perth & Kinross Council and more.
