The SENs: Friday 11th October 2013

Deadline for Dragons’ Den Applications for this year’s SE Conference and Ceilidh is next Friday, 18th October – with a prize of £5k on offer. If you are brave enough, here’s the application form. There are only a few overnight places available so if you’d still like to come along for the full event, contact Karina asap. Day delegate places are still available and, again, if interested, contact Karina. We’re moving towards having the final programme agreed and will have a full list of speakers available over the next week or so. In the meantime, here’s the draft programme. This week the SSE Alliance (Senscot, Social Firms Scotland and Social Enterprise Scotland) delivered a workshop on both days of the Voluntary Action Scotland (VAS) Annual Conference for Third Sector Interfaces (TSIs). The workshop provided a national perspective on SE – and showcased local SE developments from Edinburgh, Dundee and Renfrewshire. The workshops were well received – and, we feel, reflect the maturing relationship between SENs/ TSI’s and local government. GSEN Member, Dumbarton Corridor Community Enterprise Trust (DCRET), would really appreciate your vote! They have been nominated for an RBS Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes Award and have also been short listed in the Environmental Project of the Year category for their bike recycling and cycling project, ‘De’ils on Wheels’, vote here. There have been growing concerns across the country about an increasing dependency on Food Banks. This week, Aberdeen SEN members (including CFINE and Instant Neighbour), together with their City Council, announced the formation of the Food Banks Partnership Aberdeen. The Partnership aims to coordinate food banks in the city while guiding users towards services that can prevent them becoming reliant on these resources. See more. Aberdeen City and Shire SENs joined forces this week to hold a Trade 2 Trade event.  Attendees included SEN members, local businesses and the general public. It proved to be a busy day with lots of contacts made and produce sold.  Our very own Karina from Senscot Legal attended – providing legal surgeries. The SENs hope to hold more such events in the future – promoting the membership and developing closer working between the respective SENs.  At the VAS conference this week, it was really encouraged to hear that a number of TSIs have adopted the Voluntary Code of Practice as means of defining social enterprise. In recent weeks, the number of subscribers to The Code has been increasing steadily. If you’re a social enterprise and would like to sign up as member of the The Code, see the subscribe page. If you’re not a social enterprise you can sign up as a ‘supporter’. Cultural and GSEN members, The Media Co-op, is delighted to announce the Scottish Premiere of a feature documentary ‘Man for a Day’ at the CCA, Glasgow on 27th October at 6pm and 8.30pm. The documentary has been co-produced by Media Co-op.
