The SENs: Friday 10th July 2015

Recently, we gauged interest in establishing a new Employability SEN. We have been heartened by the level of interest shown and have now set a date for its inaugural meeting – Wed, 5th August in Glasgow (10.30 start) – venue still to be confirmed but we will confirm this by next week. The Employability SEN will be jointly facilitated by Social Firms Scotland and ourselves, with the first meeting looking to scope out the role, remit and aims of the SEN. The timing is opportune in view of a number of emerging issues in relation to employability – most notably with Scottish Govt currently seeking views on how to replace existing employment programmes in 2017 (see more); as well as, more immediately, the impact of the new EU Structural Funds. The intention is to create a strong collective voice and focal point for social firms and SEs. Like other SENs, the discussions and direction of the Employability SEN will be driven by its members. If you would like to attend on 5th, contact Jayne Chappell. Following the initial EU Funding Masterclass in Glasgow on 26th June, the second one takes place in Aberdeen on Friday, 31st July at Home Comforts, 9 East Terrace, Union Sq, Aberdeen (10.30 -1pm). To book your place, see here. These seminars are designed to share some of the core information before much of the EU programmes are “open for business”. There is a level of detail about various ‘strategic packages’ which we consider important as: a) this is how ESF and ERDF Programmes will be delivered; and b) potential applications will need to fit into these packages to have a chance of securing funding. Further ‘masterclasses’ will be held later in the summer. We’ll keep you posted on further dates. In meantime, see EU Update. Still on the EU Funding front, Edinburgh City Council is holding a ‘Bidder Event Notice’ at 10am on Tuesday 14 July at Jury’s Inn – just behind Waverley Station. This is part of the Council’s commitment to an “intensive approach to pre Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Employability Pipeline".  For Edinburgh SEN members interested in getting involved in EU Funded Employability initiatives, it is worth registering for the event – or perhaps even a SEN Rep could attend in your place. See further background information (PDF). GSEN members Dream Machine have teamed up with Treemendus to launch Glasgow’s first Social Enterprise Market with a difference. To be held on 1st and 2nd August from 10am-4pm- ‘On the Corner’, a new hub for social entrepreneurs, is located right next to The Barras Market.  If you are interested in hiring a stall for this event please email Bain Street Market. SCVO’s Third Force News is currently running its #SocEntSummer – celebrating Social Enterprise over the summer months. They are inviting folk to send in photos etc of their own or others’ social enterprise. This week’s feature is focusing on 5 SE Cafes in Edinburgh. Tweet your own pictures and stories using #SocEntSummer to join in. Reminder: DTA Scotland’s Annual Conference and AGM is now open for bookings. The event will be taking place at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on 30th/31st August – on the theme of ‘Assets, Enterprise and Creativity`. Notices TENDERS: Provision of Business Support Services Consultancy Framework – North Ayrshire Council, EFM1022-AP Waste Management Services – APUC Limited, British Sign Language Video Production – Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body, Evaluation of the Future Starts Pilot – The Prince’s Trust and more. It contains important information and articles regarding the sector, upcoming events & training, as well as funding opportunities. MAGAZINE: Youth Football Scotland and Grassroots Media have launched a brand new magazine, ‘Grassroots’. The first edition of the quarterly publication has received a fantastic response and as part of the launch, all local grassroots clubs and teams are now being given the chance to claim their limited edition physical copy. BASKETBALL: It might be a hugely successful, countywide basketball programme now, but Reach for the Sky had decidedly unglamorous beginnings as described in this Evening Times article. Dates for the Diary
