Cranhill Development Trust - in person Community Learning Exchange

Date and Time of Event:  18/05/2022 at 10:00 am

Cranhill Development Trust has an over-arching place-based objective to meet the needs of people in this specific geographical area. They have done this by responding to the complex needs of Cranhill with new and evolving services. Securing ownership of the building will allow them to continue and enhance that.

Their core activity is to provide person-centred, responsive support services to everyone, irrespective of circumstances. They focus on a community development and regeneration approach that builds and increases capacity within the community and nurtures empowerment and resilience through active participation in the planning, design, development, delivery and evaluation of services.

By providing a range of community-based support activities and services, the Trust aims to increase self-esteem and opportunity in an area of multiple deprivation. These services include working with families and individuals, providing information and advice, health and well-being services, education and learning, leisure opportunities, a community shop, and a community café where people can gather and a nearly new shop. Most recently they have opened a Post Office for the local community. CDT do this as much as possible in partnership with other agencies.

As well as community-based services, the Trust has developed the outdoor space into a community garden. Space has been created for food growing, relaxing and learning as part of a thriving community. It provides a focus for people to enjoy locally grown food, but also to engage in social and employability initiatives. There are 56 raised beds, a polytunnel, composting facilities and an outdoor covered contemplative space.

At this visit you’ll have the opportunity to hear about their approach and recent developments from local people and to visit the community shop, post office and garden. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion on how this could work within your local community.

This CLE is funded through Scottish Community Alliance’s Community Learning Exchange programme. Details of CLE participant expenses that can be claimed can be found here.
