Situated on Beach Road, Johnshaven, Wairds Park is a Community-owned and managed recreation and family holiday park, with 15 pitches for caravans and 16 pitches for tents.
Facilities for the caravan and campsite include showers, toilets, laundry room, food preparation area and a disabled toilet. All of the touring pitches are fully serviced, making the park a popular destination along the North East coast tourist trail.
The land on which the park sits was gifted to the Parish of Benholm and Johnshaven in 1923 by Miss Anna Scott of Brotherton Estates.
The Park Committee; a group of up to 15 volunteers from the local community; were charged with promoting the wellbeing of local residents by providing a meeting place and facilities for recreation and to foster a community spirit.
Since then, the park has enjoyed improvement and growth, and is now also widely acknowledged as a clean and modern camping and caravan site.
Wairds Park encompasses a range of facilities, including a playpark featuring a fort, which is used for staging reenactments of historical battles and fairy tales for children.
Adjacent to the park is a football field, home to local amateur team Johnshaven Athletic, which can be used to accommodate sporting events.
A large pavilion, facing onto the sea, provides a venue hire revenue stream, and can accommodate and cater all manner of events from birthday parties to weddings.
Multi-purpose courts can be used for tennis, basketball, football, badminton and more, while an 18-hole putting green can also be found on site.
