In the Spring of 1996, a public meeting was held in Cumnock Town Hall to propose the building of an indoor swimming pool – with a committee being formed from representatives of the local community.
Work started immediately on a period of fund-raising – taking seven years – and included home baking stalls, raffles, book & bric-a-brac stalls, duck races, dances, Xmas parties, donkey derbies, concerts, fashion shows, tea bingos, bag packing, discos and balloon races.
In November 2003, work began on the building of the new swimming pool at a cost of £2.25m – by October 2004, the work was complete and the facility was opened to the public.
Various site options had been considered and consultation with the local community took place at every stage of the journey. It was important to have a visible, well-lit site near to the road and convenient for public transport and within walking distance for local schools. This green field site was owned by East Ayrshire Council and was given to Visions Leisure as they required ownership to retain their charitable status.
Funding for the Leisure Centre came from East Ayrshire Council, The Minerals Trust, Sportscotland (The National Lottery), SCORE Environment Ltd, the Gannochy Trust, Tom Hunter, Hugh Fraser Foundation, Social Inclusion Partnership, Coalfields Regeneration Trust – as well as from a range of local businesses, churches, local people and children.
In 2008, a funding package was put together to allow an extension to the facility – doubling in size the gym space as well as developing a Spa area.
Today, Visions Leisure’s facilities include a swimming pool; fitness suite; health suite; aerobic studio; and a hydro massage area.
