The Ripple was established in 1996 and takes a community-led approach in seeking to improve the quality of life for all ages in the community by helping people to help themselves.
Based at Restalrig, Lochend Community Hub in Edinburgh, the Ripple delivers a wide range of projects designed to help local people to help themselves. With over 80 volunteering opportunities available every week, their volunteers lie at the heart of the Ripple. Together with a small staff team, they support the delivery of a wide range of projects and activities on offer at the Community Hub.
Their projects have developed in response to the many issues faced within the local community and include a daily lunch club and weekly social club for older people with door to door transport included, healthy hub walking groups, knitting, exercise and creative writing groups and cooking classes.
The Ripple Youth Service delivers open access youth work across the primary and high school age range with a broad programme of projects and activities from weekly drop in open access youth clubs, girls’ groups, detached youth work and peer mentoring.
Over and above these services, The Ripple publishes a monthly community newspaper, The Speaker, which is delivered free to 6500 local homes.
They also run their own community café – the Hub Grub Café – offering freshly made, nutritious and affordable meals and home baking. The Café provides a welcoming space where people can comfortably come on their own or with friends or support workers, meet and build relationships with the staff and volunteers as well as discover the support, activities and opportunities on offer at the Ripple.
The Café offers a chance to volunteer in a supportive environment with the opportunity to access training such as the REHIS food hygiene certificate. Some people join to rebuild confidence, meet new people and learn new skills. Others see it as a step back into employment or a way to improve their English-speaking skills and some just have the spare time and want to give something back to their community.
The Ripple runs the Café in partnership with Edinburgh Community Food and the Cyrenian’s Fareshare Programme.
