South Ayrshire Community Transport (SACT)
South Ayrshire Community Transport (SACT) is a social enterprise offering accessible community transport that aims to combat social isolation in all its forms. Their fleet of now 10 vehicles is often the key link between marginalised demographic groups and the amenities and facilities they need. Working in close cooperation with local agencies, community groups, individuals and other third-sector organisations, SACT’s service has allowed many local groups to access activities in which they would otherwise have not been able to participate.
Set up in 2015, it enables the elderly, disabled people, young people and those on a low income better access to supermarkets, health and social care, leisure facilities as well as connections to onward public transport options. They have recently developed a three day per week scheduled bus service between the village of Barr and Girvan allowing better access to local facilities. Barr had previously had no public transport service for over 10 years.
Existing customers include local schools, community groups, church groups, the Health & Social Care partnership and Community Learning and Development department in the local council.
In addition to hiring their buses out to groups, SACT organises the weekly Out & About Club which offers free outings to members of the community who find it difficult to get out of the house independently. Offering pick-up and drop-off at their front door, the Out & About Club has allowed its members – many of whom have a mobility impairment or long-term illness – to explore the local area and form new social bonds.
With a recent investment from Social Investment Scotland of £17,500, SACT was able to purchase two new vehicles with wheelchair access. The new minibuses, which arrived in early summer 2019, were inaugurated enthusiastically by the Out & About Club and have significantly increased SACT’s capacity to connect people and places in Ayrshire. SACT was also included in Social Investment Scotland’s Social Impact Report 2019.
SACT has also benefited from participation in Firstport’s LaunchMe Programme.
