Arran Eco Savvy Community

The Arran Eco Savvy Community (AES) is a group based on the Isle of Arran with the aim of identifying and accomplishing environmental projects to benefit the local community, increase environmental sustainability and support sustainable living, whilst working towards zero waste for Arran.

AES also works to provide learning opportunities and training for vocational skills which are of benefit to all ages and abilities. This helps to increase employment opportunities and allow individuals to move towards low carbon lifestyles.

AES has recently raised, through its shop, over £12,000 towards the purchase of land to be used for environmentally beneficial community projects.

They have also embarked on their Arran Energy Challenge, funded by the Climate Challenge Fund – having been awarded over £100k to deliver a year-long project to audit Arran residents domestic energy usage and help the local community to save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

They are also holding  a series of local energy surgeries at micro hubs in each village around the island, providing carbon literacy education, advice on lifestyle changes and support in the fight against climate change.

Arran Eco Savvy’s key objectives include:

  • Establishing and promoting an awareness of good environmental practice and facilitate a culture of re-use, re-cycle, up-cycle and on the Isle of Arran
  • Working with other groups and partners to establish environmental schemes which will provide involvement and skills learning for Arran residents of all age groups and all abilities.
  • Ensuring activities are cost effective and sustainable through partnerships with private enterprise and local business.

Their strategy involves mobilising and energising an environmental community group on the Isle of Arran with a growing membership of residents who support the aims and purpose of AES. Specific initiatives will include:

  • Identifying and developing local environmentally beneficial projects.
  • Enhancing the local community & environment by finding solutions which are of benefit to the local community and environment whilst improving environmental sustainability on Arran
  • Supporting collaborative working with other organisations who share their aims and values.
  • Making a positive contribution to the community & striving towards financially sustainable developments.
