On Wednesday this week, GSEN and the Yunus Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University launched the GSEN/Yunus Centre Social Business Award. Susan Aktemel (Impact Arts and Chair of GSEN), sharing the platform with Muhammad Yunus at a masterclass for GCU students and staff,  spoke about the work of Impact Arts as well as GSEN’s ambitions for Glasgow as a social enterprise city. The Award is open to any student at GCU – under graduate or post graduate. The prize is in two parts: Up to £1,000 in travel and subsistence to visit and learn from a relevant social enterprise leader on the international stage; plus £1,000 in mentoring from a leading Scottish social entrepreneur to develop their business concept. Ahead of the SE Exchange, Edinburgh SEN has been working closely with Edinburgh City Council to organise the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Summit on the 22nd March, 5pm-7pm at Edinburgh City Chamber Business Centre. Hosted by Edinburgh City Council, the evening will consist of speakers and discussion with a selection of Edinburgh enterprises making exciting strides, growing and partnering with the private sector. Sarah attended the Fife Social Enterprise Fair yesterday. Congratulations to the winner of the Dragons Den, Royal Oak Community Club. Other winners include Furniture Plus – Social Enterprise of the Year; and Lynne Ogilvie who was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year.

After what has been a long haul, Sport SEN members, Newmilns Snow & Sports Complex have now managed to secure the final piece of funding for the redevelopment of their facility. Plans are to install a new beginners’ slope as well as a new more advanced ski slope – both to be ready in time for next winter season.  More info at

Edinburgh SEN met at Captain Taylors Coffee House this week for a catch up and a social media session with Josiah Lockhart, Grassmarket Community Project.  Josiah gave an overview of social media tools available and an insightful talk on how to tweet effectively – a very useful session.  ESEN would also like to thank Victoria Pearce for her invaluable support as administrator over the last 4 years. Whilst Victoria will no longer be the SEN administrator, she will continue to attend meetings as a member.

Would your organisation benefit from some statistical consultancy work? If so, Scottish Govt is offering up to 10 days consultancy from Govt analysts. Projects could involve bringing together evidence, management and analysis of data, presenting evidence with impact or helping structure and quantify strategic problems. It is something they hope to run on an ongoing basis but, for this round, would welcome response by Friday 5th April. See more,

TRAINING: The Social Audit Network (SAN) in Scotland and Assist Social Capital have come together to deliver one-day training sessions at various locations around Scotland.
Each event will include a half-day workshop on Getting to grips with Social Accounting and Audit and another half-day on Getting to Grips with Social Capital. Lunch will be provided and is included in the price. See more
