Networks1st Update: Friday 4th November 2011

Over recent months, the Health Roundtable has been participating in the Govt’s ‘Review of engagement between Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates and the third sector’. One outcome has been the submission of an agreed paper with recommendations which is now going forward to the Quality Alliance Board. If these recommendations are adopted, it could significantly increase the opportunities for social enterprises to contribute to the delivery of services in the health and social care field. On the same theme, here’s an article in the recent NHS Scotland publication – ‘All in Good Health’ – on NHS Scotland’s commitment to sustainable procurement. You’ll recognise one of the key contributors. See, http://www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=590 Here`s the flyer and programme for the SE Ceilidh. Each year we try to refresh the programme with one or two new items. We’ve got two this year: The Big Questions – which will be in the style (we hope!) of the Sunday morning programme on BBC – and Networks Showcase will replace the `Audience with…`. This will see 9 SENs sharing their experiences through 3 workshops. The flyer will tell you more. See,http://senscot.org/docs/Flyer.pdf The Voluntary Action Scotland (VAS) Conference took place at the start of this week in Cumbernauld. We attended (along with Social Firms Scotland) to give a workshop on the role of the Supporting Social Enterprise Partnership – the Coalition is the third partner. From the contributions at the workshop it appears that the social enterprise aspect of the Interfaces’ functions remains a challenge. Our message was fairly straightforward – that the SSE Partnership can play an important role in helping and supporting both VAS and individual Interfaces in this delivery. Hopefully, we’ll be able to engage more over the coming months. Here’s our presentation, http://senscot.org/docs/VASworkshop_SSE.pps The community group Ochil Leisure Enterprises yesterday got agreement from Clackmannanshire Council to save Alva Swimming Pool from demolition.  Over the past 3 months they’ve campaigned tirelessly, getting local people, businesses and councillors onside.  Next stages are full feasibility study and business plan to help them achieve their dream. We`ll keep you posted on progress. Through links with Stirling University, a piece of research into the challenges of running a community swimming pool has been carried out by Stephen Earl, as part of his MSc in Sports Management at Stirling University. See Stephen’s paper http://www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=591 It is a slightly bleak read at times but SEN members remain positive, focussing on keeping costs down and on developing new and innovative ways to generate income.
