Networks1st Update: Friday 4th March 2011

Over the last year, we’ve been giving you updates on progress re the setting up of Third Sector Interfaces across the country. Our particular focus has been to ensure the engagement of the local social enterprise community – either directly through Social Enterprise Networks (SENs) or, where they do not yet exist, through other local social enterprises. Last month, we sent a letter, together with Social Firms Scotland and the Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition, to 16 Interfaces offering our assistance in engaging with local social enterprises. Around 50% have now responded and discussions will be taking place shortly. Last week, each Interface received notification from Scottish Govt of its specific allocations for 2011/12. See list,

Three important events looming up this month in the social enterprise calendar.
First up on Thursday 10th March is the Fife Social Enterprise Trade Fair at Keavil House Hotel in Dunfermline. See
The following week, Friday 18th March, Senscot is hosting this year`s `Fit for Purpose: Health and social enterprise` Conference at the Royal Society in George Street, Edinburgh. See And on the 24th March at the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld, CRNS will be holding its 6th Annual Conference – `More than Recycling`.CRNS has also announced their shortlist for this year’s awards. See,  Maybe there should be a special prize for anyone who attends all three!!

Couple of other bits of news: Dumfries and Galloway SEN launched its own website this week – . There are now 7 SENs with their own bespoke sites. Also, congratulations to Fife SEN’s administrator Stuart Thompson who, we hear, has landed his dream job with IF Motorsports. Live UnLtd is led by a team of passionate young people and will provide other young people with exciting opportunities to create their own opportunities and develop their community for the better.  Young people can start up their own businesses, sports teams, recreational groups and host events after being given funding of up to £2,000 per individual, coupled with a model of non-financial support from a designated development manager in their region.  See more

Case Study: Fife
Fife Social Enterprise Network was the first Local Social Enterprise Network to start up. The first meeting took place in 2004 at Furniture Plus in Dysart. FSEN is one of the most active Networks, with around 18 members.
