Networks1st Update: Friday 29th June 2012

The Social Enterprise Academy and Senscot are delighted to announce that applications are now open for ‘Ignite 2012: Scale up your Social Enterprise’. The Programme will run from 19th – 22nd October. Join a group of 18 other social entrepreneurs in a four day residential to identify key motivations, clarify goals, explore options, and plan the next steps to grow your organisation. You will leave with new understandings about your enterprise, yourself, and importantly, a plan to ‘ignite’ your business. The application deadline is 13th Sept with successful applicants being informed by 21st Sept. The programme is 75% funded by Scottish Govt, ensuring costs for SEN members are affordable. Last week Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire SENs hosted a Forth Valley-wide social enterprise event in Stirling.  More than 30 attendees from social enterprises and intermediaries attended the event hearing presentations from SEN members` Alan Fowler (Ascent) and Jane McTaggart (C-MEE), and included a discussion about the future of SE in Forth Valley.  Although this was the first meeting, they are keen to continue working together and connect up more social enterprises from across the region. The new Start-up SEN met for the first time this week at the Bike Station in Glasgow, with  11 new social enterprises in attendance. They included enterprises ranging from cafes to re-use projects to creative organisations.  The event had presentations for The Bike Station – outlining their journey from start up to a sustainable business; the SE Academy – on learning opportunities; and Senscot – on the support and benefits that a SEN can offer.  With an online forum and quarterly meetings, we hope to support these new social enterprises through their start up period and, in time, link them in with other SENs and SEs across the country.

Edinburgh SEN would like to announce Linsay Chalmers as their first directly employed member of staff.  Having spent a number of years at CRNS, Linsay brings with her a strong knowledge of the sector as well as an understanding of the issues faced by the SEN and its members.  Linsay takes up post at the end of July. We wish her luck in her new role.

Fife SEN is now in the process of becoming the 8th SEN to become constituted.  Fife SEN was one of the first networks to be established and has always been an important source of support for the SE community in Fife.  They see this as giving them a stronger collective voice and enable them to take the SEN forward with new and exciting initiatives.

One of the foremost events in the SE calendar in Scotland is CEiS’ September Conference. The event, now in its 5th year, takes place on 5th Sept at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. This year’s focus will be on ‘maintaining, developing and growing SE in Scotland’. Early Bird bookings are available until Wed 25th July. See, https://senscot.net/?viewid=12423
