Networks1st Update: Friday 24th June 2011

Networks 1st ventured into new territory this week with a visit to Orkney. We were invited up, with the assistance of HIE, to explore with local social enterprises the possibility of establishing their own Orkney Social Enterprise Network. Those involved identified a number of areas of real potential for joint working – i.e. procurement and sharing service and have agreed to meet again after the holiday period. Attendees included, amongst others, The Pier Arts Centre ( ); Orkney Community Transport ( ); and The Pickaquoy Centre ( ).

INTRA-TRADING: After feedback, the Networks 1st Intra-trading website has been updated to include a search for suppliers (See,  The page can be used to place requests to buy products and services from other SEN members across the country. You can also advertise what you supply, so others can buy from you. Good news from our friends at Media Co-op. The Glasgow-based film production company, has won NHS Scotland preferred bidder status. Media Co-op’s Louise Scott tells us, "After going head-to-head with 120 commercial production companies from all over the UK, we’re very proud that the NHS chose Media Co-op as one of their three preferred suppliers. We’re the only social enterprise to make it through NHS Scotland’s highly competitive selection process”. See,

Reminder re last week’s piece  on Scottish Govt’s  Preventative Support Working Group’s survey to assess coverage of three types of preventative support services – handyperson, small repairs and gardening services – for older people and disabled people. Results of survey will help in the development of future policy. Deadline is Monday 4th July. See,

EVENTS: YRock School workshops are running again this summer in Edinburgh and Glasgow and are also currently being promoted on Rock Radio.  They are perfect for young musicians who play guitar, drums, sing or in general want to play in bands.  See more

Ascent Scotland Ltd are having and official launch event at our premises (details below) on Friday 22nd July and to promote Suited & Booted (Established originally in Ayr by Real Work Skills Ltd), an employability initiative which provides training and uniquely interview clothing to the unemployed.  See more

Case Study: Moray SEN

Set up in 2006, Moray Social Enterprise Network (MSEN) carries out networking, training, events and other support activities. MSEN is moving forward with the next steps in developing the group. Network member REAP won the tender to deliver admin support for the 2010-2011 and will aim to build on the success of previous Social Enterprise Awards Dinners and Community of Business events.
