Networks1st Update: Friday 20th July 2012

Last month, Senscot hosted its 2nd national SE and Sport Conference at the Trades Hall in Glasgow – with approx 100 delegates in attendance. See, Conference evaluation report, http://www.se-networks.net/downloads/SE&SportConf12-Report.pdf. One of the significant developments on the day was the launch of the SE and Sport Position Paper. See, http://www.se-networks.net/downloads/sport_position_paper.pdf. This sets out a vision for the SE and sport community, the contribution it makes and the priorities that can enable sport SEs to develop and grow.

One of the main events in the SE calendar in Scotland is CEiS’ September Conference. Now in its 5th year, the CEiS Conference addresses many of the most topical issues affecting the SE community in Scotland. This year’s programme is now available in draft form See, http://www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=729.  Senscot has reserved 20 ‘Early Bird’ places for SEN members (£95 + VAT). Contact karina@senscot.net to book a place.

News from Voluntary Action Scotland (VAS) on the appointment of Calum Irving as their new CEO. Calum is joining from Sense Scotland and will be taking up post in mid-August. We believe this appointment augurs well for the SE community. Not only does Calum have direct experience of working in a social enterprise, he has also, in his time at Sense Scotland, been able to attend a couple of Health SEN meetings. We wish Calum well in his new post. See, www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=723.

Firstport awardee, Laura Nicholson hit the news this week with her social enterprise, Velocity offering revellers the chance to cycle, rather than drive, to next months Belladrum music festival, near Beauly. See, www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=727. Also worth a look is Firstport’s summer newsletter. See, http://eepurl.com/njfvL.

Couple of pieces of good news from Aberdeen SEN members. Rosie’s Cafe, on the go since 1999, has been shortlisted from over 600 entrants, for the UK finals of the Private Business Awards 2012 for SE of the Year. See, www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=726
Also, the Breadmaker has announced that it has been selected as the ‘chosen supplier’ for bakery products to Donald Trump’s new golfing complex in Balmedie. See, www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=728. Congratulations to both.

The RBS SE 100 Index (2012) is now open for applications – closing date 30th August. The SE 100 lists the top 100 growing SEs in the UK, with a combined prize of £25,000 going to the best performers by growth, impact and for ‘newcomers’. Scotland has always been well represented in the Index, with the Wise Group being one of last year’s winners. To apply, see www.se-networks.net/shownotice.php?articleid=712.

The Social Enterprise Academy is running its Ignite 2012 between 19th – 22nd October at the marine Hotel in North Berwick.
