Networks1st Update: Friday 17th July 2009

This year is Senscot’s 10th anniversary and amazingly it’s already the Social Enterprise Ceilidh’s 5th! We’re at New Lanark again (will this year be the last there?) and the dates are 19th of November, which is Social Enterprise Day and 20th. We’re pleased to be able to confirm support for the event from RBS. There will be the usual favourites such as Speed Trading and the Dragon’s Den which Unity Enterprise will once again be sponsoring! Any social enterprises out there who’d like to match Unity’s generous £2,000 investment in the sector please get in touch. There will also be some new additions for this year including a one-to-one Legal Clinic (advanced bookings required). One difference this year is bookings will be done via the Networks 1st online forum. Put the date in your diary now http://networks1st.ning.com/events/social-enterprise-ceilidh

A number of you have already shown an interest so if you’d like to get involved contact Anna for more information, guidance notes and an application form anna@senscot.net

An interesting development from Northern Ireland currently getting high praise is the Big Black Book Social Enterprise Trade Directory. It aims to promote opportunities for social enterprises to do more business – by selling to each other, to the public and private sectors, and selling to the general public. Entries in the Directory are free to social enterprises set up and trading in Northern Ireland.http://www.bigblackbook.org/opencontent/?itemid=1

Social enterprises could win up to £5,000 in a new awards programme launched today by the Social Enterprise Coalition (SEC). Social enterprises across the UK can apply for the awards from today until 28 September 2009. SEC is looking for the ‘most successful and inspiring social enterprises’ in the categories of best social enterprise with a turnover of more than £1m, the best with a turnover of less than £1m and best new social enterprise. As well as the cash, winners will receive business and media support. Applications will compete in national heats for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The heat winners, announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November, will then be in the running for the UK-wide prizes.
