Networks1st Update: 8th August 2008

The first Social Enterprise Network meeting took place over 4 years ago in Fife at Furniture Plus. Thirteen of us turned up to debate how to move things forward but there and no real map for the road ahead. Things have moved on a bit since then and there are now 18 Networks both local and thematic around the country and they have been included in the Scottish Government’ Enterprising Third Sector Strategy. The next stage of development will see some of the Networks adopting legal structures (Argyll & Bute SEN recently became incorporated as a Company Ltd by Guarantee). At the Network Reps meeting in March this year Senscot was asked to produce a rough ‘Blueprint’, which was presented in June. We’d be happy to hear thoughts on this document. Send comments to colin@senscot.netIt’s now less than 4 weeks till the Social Enterprise Fringe Forum which takes place on 4th of September. We’ve got a great line up from beginning to end, kicking off by looking at the new Social Enterprise Kite Mark at the Melting Pot, then an event at Dance Base in the Grass Market (Scotland’s National Centre for Dance) where you’ll have the chance to talk with a number of experts on a range of topics including SROI, Rural Regeneration and the world of Recycling. Places are limited for the first two events and they’re going fast so to avoid being left out email Anna to book your place 1st sees the launch of the much anticipated Scottish Investment Fund (social investment fund See here). The money £30 million over 3 years will go to organisations with a track record (at least 3 years) with the ambition to become self-financing through this investment. Other smaller funds will also be coming on stream including the smaller Investment Fund (which will be taking bids from January 09). It would be interesting to know if LSEN members are planning to go for this money, has the government got it right with these funds?
