My own Traumatic Brain Injury 1988
→6 week coma
→did not speak→no language
→Just was Observer→’who was I?’
== After rehab => Lost my whole identity!
BUT since I had always dealt with drawing, my father encouraged me
With my photo diary and encouragement and ‘reminders’ from my many friends, I recovered my ability and will to deal with them
Had to learned to do, much again!
→this was hard!
Art help→learn to link ability & be with people
So became very involved in Community education
→In the community
Worked with physically and mentally Disabled people
→with Aspergers Syndrome, then 18-55 yr old Brain Injury survivors
→now active Brain injury worker
WANT TO HELP OTHER18-55 YEAR BRAIN INJURY SURVIVORS
Share what helped me
→built me back to work
→Community education →Learning disability work
→help more brain injured (Scottish Head Injury Forum committee)
→Now, use firsthand info to help:
Focus→to take time→ Help you to learn
→become aware →take part
→to overcome what’s hard
→DO things again → become ACTIVE PARTICIPANT!
NOT TO STAY ON SIDELINE→’OBSERVER’
→do with others.
BECAUSE I KNOW HOW HARD IT CAN BE, I WANT TO HELP YOU!
