A South Lanarkshire community with plans to purchase the site of a historic 18th century windmill, and breathe new life into the local area, is one of eight across the country sharing in £1.2 m of Scottish Land Fund cash.
Carluke Development Trust (CDT) receives £278,000 to bring into community ownership the High Mill site next to Carluke town centre. The site includes the A-listed High Mill, which is the most complete windmill of its type in existence in Scotland, and a former market garden extending to 1.2 acres.
As Tom Sneddon, Chair of Carluke Development Trust explains, the group will use its award to purchase the site and turn it into a community growing space that will provide new training, employment and volunteering opportunities:
“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this crucial financial support from the Scottish Land Fund, allowing CDT, on behalf of the communities of Carluke, to take ownership of the land and the buildings of the Carluke High Mill. The work has only just begun and we will now embark on the journey of creating a new community garden and growing space which will become a focal point for educational, training and volunteering activities within Carluke. This will also be a significant catalyst for the future development of Carluke’s town centre and of Carluke itself.”
Carluke Development Trust is one of eight groups across Scotland sharing in £1.2 million. Speaking today while visiting Bannockburn House, another historic building brought into community ownership with Scottish Land Fund cash back in December 2017, Minister, Cabinet Secretary for Land Reform Roseanna Cunningham said of today’s grants: “I’m delighted to see the Scottish Land Fund making these awards which will help us progress towards our goal of expanding community ownership and control of key local assets. Each project will make its own distinctive contribution to the quality of life in the local community, bringing people together and creating opportunities for employment, recreation and volunteering. The Scottish Government will continue to promote community land ownership and work to ensure that land in Scotland delivers benefits for everyone.”

We know that groups put a tremendous amount of research, drive and passion into fleshing out their community ownership plans, and I am delighted that the Scottish Land Fund has been able to step in and make their dreams a reality.”

Straiton Village Cooperative
Award – £257,500
This group will purchase the Village Store’s premises and adjacent residential house in the rural village of Straiton in South Ayrshire. The Co-operative saved the Store from closure in 2008 and since then has been successfully running it. Ownership of the properties will secure the shop for the community creating the opportunity to extend the range of products and services on offer and provide an additional source of income by renting out the adjacent house.
Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre SCIO
Award – £68,262
This group will take ownership of the Kirkshaws Neighbourhood Centre, in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, which it currently leases. Community ownership will allow the group to refurbish the centre and to further meet the needs of the local community.
Dunshalt Community Shop Ltd
Award – £97,500
This group will purchase the former Dunshalt Village Shop and Post Office in Fife, which closed in May 2016. The shop was the only one in the village and its closure has resulted in villagers having to make a 5 mile round trip to purchase basic groceries. DCS intend to refurbish the premises and improve the range of goods and services available.
Strathmore Community Hub Steering Group
Award – £113,000
This group will purchase the former medical centre in Coupar Angus, the Trades Lane Health Centre, to develop a community hub and support the community reduce social isolation and increase well-being, community learning and creative opportunities. They plan to run several community activities that include; a community café, a men’s shed, an older people’s service, training and meeting spaces, and art room.
Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Community Company
Award – £202,000
This group will purchase a piece of open land and deciduous woodland situated in the centre of the village of Fort Augustus, following a successful community right to buy decision. They plan to manage the woodland by retaining the broadleaf trees to create a woodland amenity with walks. Other plans include the development of six sheltered housing units and up to eight low cost homes.
Community Development Company Nesting
Award – £47,109
This group will purchase a former primary school, the Aald Skul and immediate surrounding area and wooden huts, in Vassa, South Nesting. Once in community ownership, they plan to provide a range of activities through a five year phased plan including a childcare facility; a gym, a workshop and learning centre and meeting and storage rooms for groups and businesses to hire.
Branchton Community Centre Association
Award – £120,148
This group will purchase the Branchton Community Centre including the building and associated land, car park, sports area, play area and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). They aim to provide a refurbished play area, a community café, vocational classes, health, fitness and diet activities, children and youth initiatives, community development work, enterprise initiative and employability initiatives.
