It’s official … Scotland are footballing world champions – again.
Ally Dawson’s Scotland men’s team won the 2011 Homeless World Cup in Paris by beating Mexico 4-3 – four years after their first success in the tournament.
“What a wonderful result,” said Dawson, the former Rangers and Scotland defender.
“The team have done themselves and Scotland proud and deserve every bit of credit they receive.
“They worked incredibly hard and they have beaten the best teams in the world. The players are worthy winners of this competition.”
David Duke, chief executive of Street Soccer Scotland (the social enterprise that runs Scotland’s homeless teams) said: “The players went into the tournament determined to do Scotland proud and they have done exactly that.
“Some teams were technically better, but Scotland’s players showed a belief, spirit and heart that no other team could match and we are now the world champions. It is a brilliant feeling.”
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Jade Morrison was named Women’s Player of the Tournament.
