The Scottish Government has approved a community right to buy bid for the former RAF Machrihanish Airbase in South Kintyre.
Machrihanish Airbase Community Company submitted an application to register a community interest in land that included the former airbase in December 2009, after the Ministry of Defence’s property management vehicle Defence Estates took steps to sell it.
Ministers approved their application to register their interest in the land in February 2010 but the application was later turned down because the community body did not correctly carry out a ballot.
However, the group then reballoted its community in December 2010 and submitted a further right to buy application, which has now been approved.
Environment minister Roseanna Cunningham said: "This has been a long and difficult journey for the community company in Machrihanish and I am delighted to see their efforts coming to fruition.
"Considerable work remains to be done in tackling the liabilities on this site but I am confident that, with support from various public and private organisations, the site will be put right and the community will be able to reap rewards for its efforts.
"I look forward to hearing of progress made and to the rejuvenation of the South Kintyre economy."
