Government Agrees Amendment To Bill
Andy Wightman

After a long-running campaign by land campaigner and Green member Andy Wightman, supported by Green MSP Alison Johnstone, the Scottish Government has agreed to amend their Long Leases Bill. This Bill would have seen what is now Princes Mall being handed to the current tenant, David Murray, for just 40p – despite the face that Waverley Market is Common Good Land and not actually owned by the Council.

Alison Johnstone said: “This is a very welcome result after years of hard work by local Greens and other campaigners. The Government has finally seen the sense of keeping this valuable land in public hands and I think that both current and future residents of Edinburgh will very much appreciate this decision.”
