EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award for David Cook
Our Chief Executive David Cook has won an EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 Scotland award.
Recognised as one of the most prestigious business award programmes in the world, the EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards celebrate the UK’s most innovative business leaders. Now in its 28th year globally and 16th year in the UK, Entrepreneur of the Year honours the inspirational leadership of entrepreneurs.
David has led Wasps Studios for 23 years, transforming the organisation from a small loss-making charity into a fast growing cultural social enterprise – one of the largest of its kind in the UK.
Judges of the award were impressed with Wasps strategic direction. Having achieved financial self sufficiency, our income from trading has increased 79% in three years. We are now developing new income streams within the sector and planning to offer advice and support to other cultural and third sector organisations.
They were also impressed with our social impact, from creating employment to supporting up to 1,000 creative practitioners with workspace, expanding into hard to reach Highland and Island communities and engaging with more than 20,000 people every year.
David said “The Scottish award really celebrates the creativity and hard graft of the whole of the Wasps’ staff team over the last decade in transforming the organisation.
A special group of people has created a special company and it’s brilliant that this has now been recognised not just in our own sector by the wider business community too."
As a Scotland winner, David will now go forward to the UK finals where he will compete for the prestigious UK overall EY Entrepreneur of the Year title. We’ll keep you posted!
