Cat will be discussing Black Lives Matter as a mandate to centre the black and mixed-race people of colour in this time, how she, as artist, activist and curator, targets social justice and work to serve marginalised communities by telling their stories, especially now the pandemic has exacerbated and amplified the cracks in the system that already existed, making them more visible. Cat is now looking to work on exhibitions that explore the intersection of visibility and activism. As such, she is currently working on an online exhibition showing the life of black and mixed-race women of colour with afro-caribbean textured hair, the way that such are seen under Eurocentric standards of beauty and the impact that this has had historically and into present day. You can read more about Cat’s practice below in our Member’s Spotlight.
As well as an opportunity to reflect on Cat’s talk, there will as always be an informal opportunity to connect with fellow artists and creatives and have a discussion. If you’re a new Glasgow CAN member it’s also a great opportunity to meet some other members and get to know each other in a friendly setting.
As always it is FREE to attend and is open to non-members too so please do let your peers and colleagues know. Once you have signed up you will be emailed the Zoom meeting link closer to the time.
If you have any accessibility needs please get in touch as we can arrange for things like a BSL interpreter in advance.
