Community Food SEN member Our Community Kitchen has been shortlisted for the Sunday Mail’s 2019 Scotland’s Champions awards.
Set up in 2018, Our Community Kitchen was developed by Dementia Friendly East Lothian as an intergenerational project to tackle issues around loneliness and social isolation.
Based in East Lothian, the project aims to bring people together who are feeling isolated to enjoy good hearty food in a relaxed and friendly environment, hosting regular communal meals at the local bowling club in response to a growing local elderly population.
A mixture of funding from The Big Lottery, Haddington Community Council and the Haddington and Lammermuir Area Partnership has allowed Our Community to expand its activities in 2019, now hosting three community meals every week.
Meals are open to all, and are popular with carers and low-income families, as well as people living with dementia and physical disabilities.
Our Community Kitchen’s efforts have been rewarded by its inclusion in a shortlist of three for Community Project of the Year in this year’s Sunday Mail Scotland’s Champions awards.
The team will be up against Families and Friends Against Murder & Suicide Wishaw, a community group which has helped dozens of families cope with personal loss through murder and suicide, and Dates-n-Mates Scotland, Scotland’s national dating and friendship agency run by and for people with learning disabilities.
The awards will be held at the Double Tree by Hilton Glasgow Central Hotel on June 22.
