A Social Enterprise Strategy For Scotland (Consultation)

A number of organisations active in supporting social enterprise in Scotland have been in discussion with a view to developing a ‘Social Enterprise Strategy for Scotland’ that would identify key areas of development for social enterprise in the coming years. These organisations, initially, have included Social Firms Scotland; the Social Enterprise Academy; Firstport; CEiS; Senscot; SES; Community Enterprise; HISEZ; InspirAlba.


The intention will be to consult widely across the SE community in Scotland to get as representative a view as is possible in determining what requires to be in place for social enterprise to continue its development and growth over the next 5/10 years – what and where our priorities should lie.


With a number of statutory agencies – Scottish Govt; Big Lottery (Scotland); HIE; EU Commission – developing longer term strategies that will all fundamentally impact on the environment in which social enterprises operate and the support that is available to them, it is an opportune moment for the sector itself to articulate its longer term aspirations and how these can be achieved.


The seven main issues already raised by the sector in relation to the above are:
Issue 1: Raising Awareness of Social Enterprise
Issue 2: Social Enterprises Delivering Public Services
Issue 3: Social Enterprise and Community Empowerment
Issue 4: Social Enterprise and Employability
Issue 5: Social Enterprise as part of the Business Community
Issue 6: The Support Landscape for Social Enterprises
Issue 7: Direct Financial Support for Social Enterprise
Issue 8: Taxation and Fiscal Incentives to Support Social Enterprise


We have asked the team at Social Value Lab to independently analyse the consultation responses. Rest assured that any views you provide will not be attributed directly to your organisation and will be used only towards ‘A Social Enterprise Strategy for Scotland’ and, in turn,  inform the sector’s input both to the Smith Commission and Scottish Govt’s Social Enterprise  2015-25 strategy.
