A Social Enterprise Forum for Aberdeen

A Social Enterprise Forum for Aberdeen

The Third Sector Interface role awarded to ACVO by The Scottish Government and The Aberdeen City Alliance (TACA), Aberdeen’s Community Planning Partnership, gives us a responsibility to develop, support and represent social enterprise and sustainability in the City and to strengthen the voices of social enterprises in their connection with Community Planning. To this end, ACVO require to develop a Social Enterprise Forum, the shape and membership of which we are now consulting the sector upon.

All Third Sector organisations working in Aberdeen that meet the following definition or intend to do so within the next 3 years are invited to book a place at a meeting led by ACVO Board members Jeannie Felsinger of GREC and Matthew Reid of Langstane Housing Association on 30th March at 2.30 pm at ACVO. This invitation is extended to all those presently involved with the existing Social Enterprise Network in Aberdeen. It may be that this first meeting will establish that those wishing to be in membership of the Social Enterprise Forum may agree that it should follow the shape and membership of the existing SEN or perhaps that this meeting will agree that the aims and objectives of this Forum will differ from those of the SEN.

The definition of social enterprise used by ACVO is based on the criteria for the Social Enterprise mark. The criteria for the Mark have been agreed by leaders and representatives from support organisations within the social enterprise movement. http://www.socialenterprisemark.org.uk/ The Mark is awarded to businesses who meet specific criteria that demonstrate they are working primarily for social or environmental goals, and that 50% of their profits are reinvested towards those goals. Amongst the criteria for the Social Enterprise Mark and used by ACVO is that the Third Sector organisation earns (or intends to do so within the next 18 months) at least 50% of its income from trading. Trading includes contracting/ delivering services under Service Level Agreement with a public authority, or delivering under commercial sponsorship contract.
