Capital Credit Union
Capital Credit Union was initially registered in June 1989 as the Lothian Regional Council Employees Credit Union, to provide easily accessible savings and borrowing facilities to its staff.
Following de-regionalisation of the old council structure in 1996 the Credit Union reinvented itself as Capital Credit Union and welcomed the addition of many new sponsoring employers. This outcome increased the awareness and the coverage of Capital Credit Union tremendously within the industrial community of Edinburgh and the Lothians.
In 2002, all credit unions in the United Kingdom became accountable to the Financial Services Authority and in the same year Capital Credit Union applied to have its common bond extended to a live and work one and to also extend coverage to include Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders.
Today, Capital provides savings, lending and insurance services to over 10,000 members from over 40 sponsoring employers and the wider community. The organisation now has an asset base of over £11m and is the largest Credit Union operating in the Lothians and the Scottish Borders area.
Sponsoring employers include the Scottish Parliament, City of Edinburgh Council, West Lothian Council, East Lothian Council, Midlothian Council, Lothian & Borders Fire Brigade and Lothian NHS. A number of community initiatives have also been initiated and partnerships are being forged to empower those from both financially and socially excluded areas.
Capital, is controlled by a Board of Directors elected from the membership and is managed on a day-to-day basis by Marlene Shiels, the Chief Executive and a dedictaed staff team. It is arguably the most successful credit union in Britain today and has pioneered and launched a number of tailor-made products unique to credit union members as well as championing volunteer development.
Additionally, Capital Credit Union has more Development Educators than any other Credit Union in Britain and has been recognised by the movement as a model employer.
