Golspie Recycling and Environmental Action Network (GREAN)

GREAN began its recycling project in January 2002. It arose from demand within the community.  A steering group had formed about 18 months earlier made up mainly of a floating membership from various agencies and local residents.  The background was a combination of economic depression in East Sutherland combined with the realisation that virtually nothing was being done either educationally or in practice to initiate recycling in the area. The group spent about six months discussing possibilities and, after carrying out a straw use survey amongst local crofters, farmers and horse enthusiasts an outline business plan was written. A public meeting was held in Golspie late in 2000 during which the plan was presented. This was followed quickly by the formation of a community group, constitution, charitable status, funding bids, recruitment of a project manager and one part time worker. Unit 7 and the garden/ composting site was identified and leased and the paper shredding machinery researched and purchased.

Today, more than three years later GREANíS original project has grown and thrives. Five full time staff now operate a kerbside collection, dry recyclate bring site and composting bring site, and have achieved in the region of 30% diversion of Golspieís waste from landfill. The GREAN community garden will begin in earnest this season with the recruitment of a development officer. The range of recyclates handled has recently extended to include food cans, bicycles, lawnmowers and tools, and will soon include glass at the kerbside and plastic bottles.
