Eday Community Enterprises
Eday Community Enterprises Ltd was set up in 1982 when the local community bought over the private retail outlet on the island. Eday Community Enterprises Ltd is a co-op set up as an Industrial and Provident Society, with 60% of the 127 islanders holding a share in the company. The companyís aims are to meet most of the day-to-day needs of the population and help to promote health and well-being in the community.
The shop provides a huge range of groceries such as petrol, diesel, coal, gas, hardware, pet food and animal feed. They are an active member of the Co-operative Group, which allows them to access quality products such as fresh fruit and veg. at discount prices, and provide a valuable service supplying the islandís primary school with fresh fruit and veg.
With a turnover of £250,000 and 7 part-time staff the shop is the largest employer on the island and almost entirely self-sufficient. Occasionally they do access grant funding for capital costs such as their new chiller unit or the cost of replacing the local petrol pump, which they have also carried out.
A member of the Scottish Executive Initiative at the Edge (set up in 1998 to tackle the problems faced by the most fragile rural areas in Northern Scotland), the shop is estimated to account for 90% of the islandersí food shopping and has become the cornerstone of the islandís viability. This makes it critical element in keeping people on the island and sustaining Edayís community.
