The Fly Right Dance Company
The Fly Right Dance Company is Scotland's only dance company specialising in traditional Afro-American dance styles such as Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug and Jive. Following major performance successes in Scotland and the United States, the company incorporated in September 1998 and has charitable status. Since then, Fly Right has expanded its cast and is constantly expanding its choreography repertoire. The company won a commendation in the Bank of Scotland Arts Award in 2001. The Award recognised its skills in sponsorship management. Fly Right was also shortlisted for the FT Arts and Business Awards in the same year; and has been awarded a substantial grant through Arts & Business New Partners scheme for its partnership work with British Energy. In 2003, the company obtained finance from Social Investment Scotland to purchase a mobile Outreach Unit, to allow the company to function whilst on the road.
The company's activities are two-fold:
One of the company's primary performance objectives is to give opportunities to those who might not have formal dance training but who have talent and ability and a willingness to have fun performing! We have performed with the acclaimed Children's Classic Concerts for Glasgow City Council's Inspiration Festival on 7 November 2003, and will also be performing with them at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall in February 2004.
The company also has an extensive cabaret repertoire and regularly performs at various corporate entertainment engagements for clients such as Gleneagles Hotel, Sheraton Hotels, St Andrews Bay Golf Resort and Spa, Davidson Chalmers WS, Renegade, Prompt Events, Event Mechanics and The Entertainment Company. The company also has its own show and mini-show, for touring.
The company has established itself at the forefront of dance education in Scottish schools with its extremely successful education programme, which has already attracted sponsorship from British Energy and Bank of Scotland, and a substantial grant from Arts & Business New Partners Scheme. Recent major developments include a programme to bring dance to all 67 schools in North Ayrshire this academic session, and extending the scope of the programme to tackle social issues such as bullying and teenage sexual health.
The workshops present different aspects of social dancing from the last century, focusing on dances such as the Charleston and Jive. The sessions concentrate on developing fitness and coordination by learning fun dance steps and seek to provide a lasting benefit by helping to build confidence and to develop valuable personal and social skills.
The company is regularly in demand to provide tuition for adults, and presents regular classes for DanceBase, the national dance centre for Scotland.
