Edinburgh Palette is a community of makers, designers and artists, working alongside charities, creative enterprises and small businesses.
Situated on London Road next door to Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh Palette’s guiding mission is to provide studio artists, entrepreneurs and community organisations with low-cost studio space and unique, organic opportunities for collaboration.
In 2008, Edinburgh Palette successfully negotiated for several floors of the unused St Margaret’s House – a former office block disregarded by many for its ‘neo-brutalist’ architecture – and is afforded rate relief from Edinburgh City Council due to its status as a registered charity.
By Spring 2010, Edinburgh Palette had leased all the remaining floors of St Margaret’s House and filled all 200 studios with budding artists, crafters and community organisations.
Crucially, Edinburgh Palette receives no external funding and instead offers a clear example of how artists can “do business”: mixing creativity and profitability.
Freedom from funding allows management and artists to take advantage of any given situation, responding to need and aspiration with some fiscal control over their income, costs and therefore their projects and developments.
Edinburgh Palette has created an inclusive hub where artists, craftspeople, community groups and businesses share space, interact and exchange ideas, while providing a diverse programme of public events and exhibitions.
The charity has a broad range of expertise in the fine and the applied arts, urban regeneration, studio provision, community engagement, gallery exhibitions and public events.
A diverse range of facilities are on offer, including community drawing rooms, a huge range of studios, three exhibition galleries, dancefloors, rehearsal rooms, a professional standard printing studio and even its own on-site theatre.
Regular workshops are also put on to cater for a range of interests, including dress-making, drama, yoga, jewellery-making, pilates and tapestry weaving.
One window studio prices start from £150 per calendar month, whereas workshops start at around £10 for an individual session, with block bookings available.
