Eskimo Financial Training Academy

Eskimo is a Community Interest Company which aims to help disabled and/or disadvantaged individuals into employment within the financial services sector.

Having formed partnerships with leading financial services companies and third sector organisations, Eskimo strives to increase the number of opportunities for people who face barriers to employment.

Eskimo is the brainchild of David Robertson, who noticed after 15 years of working in the insurance industry that there remains a distinct lack of prospects afforded to people with a disability, or indeed any other barriers to employment.

Determined to redress the balance, David set a target of putting 24 disadvantaged individuals through a professional, accredited finance course each year, with the aim of creating a more natural route into employment for his students.

Through a series of 12-month training courses, Eskimo help their students achieve a formal qualification through the Chartered Insurance Institute, offering courses in insurance and financial services.

The training courses are run in tandem with three work experience placements. The first acts as an introductory placement, helping the candidate find the right area of employment.

This is followed by a more focussed period of training, based on the candidate’s experience of their initial placement. A second, targeted work experience placement is then organised, giving the student a valuable insight into the area of the financial services industry that they have identified they would like to pursue a career in.

The training course is then completed, and hereafter Eskimo will endeavour to identify organisations who have vacancies opening in the coming months, ensuring that the third work experience placement functions almost like an extended job interview.

Courses will be run in Edinburgh and in Glasgow initially, and are due to begin in October 2017.

Eskimo intends to expand its programme of training courses to Manchester, Birmingham and London as it grows, with further locations in Scotland also on the horizon.

David said, “We aim to bring fresh talent and ideas in to the employment market, whilst offering employers a more socially inclusive and ethically-minded option to help them meet their recruitment needs.”
